Rational Choice Theory
A Practical Guideline to Indoor Gardening
Rational choice theory is a concept that suggests people choose the right decision. It helps to explain the decision of choosing the best and most beneficial. The theory helps to identify the individual’s advantages and disadvantages. The decision is based on taste, budget, circumstance, etc. It prefers individual demands and opinions on their perspective.
For example, when someone goes to the market to buy vegetables such as tomatoes, potatoes, cucumber, or carrots, it depends on his/her need, budget, taste, and also health needs. So, mainly The Rational choice theory helps to make a better decision which is useful. In the basket of so many options, you have to choose the right one. It makes it easier to understand, how to maintain, what is the cost and benefits, advantages and disadvantages. Rational choice theory is based on an assumption of a person’s personal preference and available information.

Applying Rational Choice theory to Indoor Gardening
My hobby is gardening. I love to plant trees. Though, I do not have enough space for gardening. For that reason, I choose to plant trees on the balcony and some corners of my house. In addition, maintenance of a garden is costly. I need a person to take care of it. Also rapidly need to clean the bottom part of the trees.
Another obstacle to gardening is heavy rainfall. Sometimes soft and tiny plants could break down in heavy rain. Moreover, water sinking and floating are other obstacles to gardening. It needs high maintenance and also it is expensive. Additionally, it also affects health because it needs physical strains. Even I have to spend more on gardening.
So, I preferred indoor gardening rather than outdoor gardening. The Rational choice theory helps me to pick the best option for my space, time, and resources. Indoor gardening gives us aesthetic vibes. As well as it also can filter air circulation and make the indoor environment healthier to breathe by providing oxygen in the air. It also helps to consider some factors like climate change and reserves amount of sunlight.

Selecting low-maintenance Plants:
First of all, with the guidance of The Rational Choice theory, I will select low-maintenance plants for my Indoor gardening. They can rise by own self and they do not need much attention. So, I do not need to spend much more time on their maintenance.
For example, sometimes I could be busy with my activities, so I cannot give them water and enough time to care for them. In this case, the theory helps me to choose low-maintenance plants like snake plants and (Zanzibar gem) ZZ plants. It can survive in low light and less water.
Choosing plants based on Light conditions:
There are so many variations of indoor plants, which reserve different amounts of sunlight. Some rooms are very open to get in sunlight easily, while other rooms get indirect light. I choose plants that match the light conditions of my room. For sunny rooms need pants like fiddle leaf figs, jade plants, moss rose, or aloe vera. On the other hand, for the lowest sunny rooms I choose pothos, spider plants, or peace lilies. It would be better for me to maintain.
For example, on my balcony, I do not get enough sunlight. So, I would prefer to choose Pothos and spider plants. I do not need to too much worry about the plants to grow and survive.

Lack of Space:
In this era, houses and apartments are tiny and their balconies are also tiny. There is not much place on the balcony. So, I would like to use a flower pot and myself to set them. By using this thing, I could plant more indoor plants. Moreover, I can also hang these plants by rope.
For example, the Kangaroo pocket plant, Christmas tree, Areca palm plant, turtle vine plant, etc. these plants do not need a bigger place to grow.

Animal-friendly plants:
Some houses have pets like cats, dogs, or birds. So, they have to choose plants pet-friendly and non-toxic plants for animals. Rational choice theory helps me to choose plants for my balcony and indoor gardening. If you have a cat or dog that likes to explore and chew plants, a Calathea is a great choice. It's completely non-toxic and adds a vibrant, tropical feel to the home. Though, these are high-maintenance plants.
For example, I have a cat. It like to explore on my balcony. So, I planted areca palms on my balcony, which is safe for both cats and dogs. Areca palms, also known as butterfly palms, are popular indoor plants. They prefer bright, indirect light and regular watering.
Fertilizer: Caring for indoor plants is not just involved often providing water. It also needs to provide them with proper nutrition and protect them from diseases. So, fertilizers supply essential nutrition that helps plants to boost growth and make them healthy. At the same time, anti-fungal treatments are used to treat fungal infections. It can harm my plants.
For example, in the pothos plant, there are growing white spots, which means it is affected by fungi. It can kill the plant. So, it needs fungal spray or fertilizer. I use Vermicompost fertilizer and Osmocote fertilizer for my indoor plants.
Here are the pictures of my plant's fertilizer:

Conclusion:
In summary, Rational choice theory helps me to make thoughtful decisions. It helps me to find out the pros and cons of indoor gardening. I chose indoor plantation instead of outdoor gardening. Because of the lack of space and other difficulties. I preferred indoor plants cause; it doesn't need much space. Guidance of Rational choice theory, I make decisions that suit my lifestyle. Considering my time, space, time, and budget. It helps to select low-maintenance plants (snake plants and ZZ plants), then choose plants that match with my house's lighting conditions (pothos plant, spider plant, and peace lilies plants), and also lack of places. Moreover, it ensures the safety of pets and non-toxic or allergic problems. Indoor gardening is as flexible as my demands. I could make a beautiful, aesthetic, and healthy indoor environment.
